Thessalia

Thessalia leanira

Uncommon on the transect. Only a rare stray at Gates Canyon even though its host plant is present and there are breeding populations around nearby Lake Berryessa. More or less regular at Washington, but not recorded all years. Usually found in exposed, rocky situations, often on cliffs. The underside pattern is unique in our fauna. Adults are strongly attracted to Woolly Sunflower (Eriophyllum) and Wild Buckwheat (Eriogonum nudum group) and to Coyotemint and Yerba Santa. This species often occurs on serpentine.
