Tilden's Skipper
Hesperia colorado tildeni is a subspecies found in the drier parts of the Coast Range. It has only indistinct patterning--sometimes nearly invisible on the hindwing underside--but is easily distinguished from other hesperiine skippers by its size and wing shape. It is not known from any of our transect sites and has been recorded in our area only once in the history of our study--at Suisun on September 14, 2024, as an apparent stray, probably from Mt. Diablo. It is univoltine, flying in late summer into autumn. It is named for J.W. Tilden, a prominent Lepidopterist of the 20th Century and a major contributor to our knowledge of California butterflies.
